The Implications of Time Difference
It may seem crazy or worrisome to anybody who knows you, but if you regularly play poker on one of the web sites that accept American players, it might be a good idea to set the alarm, get out of bed early and get onto your computer for a game of poker.
No doubt that partners around the nation will be reaching for the Yellow Pages to look up the most convenient venue for a meeting of GA, but there is a good rationale for this seemingly insane recommendation.
You see, at 9.00am in London, it is 2.00am in California and Las Vegas, 4.00am in Iowa and Chicago and 5.00am in New York and along the Eastern Seaboard. Whilst you have been sleeping soundly, poker players from the US have been up all night, winning and losing, going on tilt, coming off again, having bad beats and bad companions. Now they are tired, possibly a little the worse for wear due to that bottle they keep tucked away in their computer desk, and you are as fresh as a daisy.
As you will appreciate, there are going to be opportunities to take on, and beat, players whose full focus is not on their game. Maybe they had a hard day at the office, or there are problems at home or they went out for a few drinks during the course of the evening. In any event, you are in a far better mental and physical condition to be playing a game of skill and guile than they ever are!
Consider if you were playing in a live game, and a fellow came to join your table, looking as if he had been up all night and a little red-eyed from a few drinks – you would be counting his money before you looked at your hole cards. There is no difference to the state of mind you should be in when you play poker online.
Most lobbies show a list of players and where they originate from. Use this information to your advantage to pick a table where there are a high proportion of Stateside players. You may find that the player/flop statistics are a little higher than average due to their lack of concentration, and there may even be fewer hands per hour played as players doze off between blinds! Of course, there is a lot of exaggeration in this theory, but there is a valid point here, and this is that it is better to play poker when you have your full faculties about you.
Just remember that as it gets late in Europe, the Asians and the Australasians are doing the same thing too, as somebody, somewhere is devouring his breakfast and looking forward to a profitable day on the tables.
